Joshua Longbottom

Postdoctoral Researcher

Josh is a spatial epidemiologist who joined the VBD Ecology Lab as postdoctoral researcher in January 2022, working on the lab's Rift Valley Fever Virus project.

Prior to starting as a postdoctoral researcher, Josh completed his PhD in Epidemiology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (2018-2021). His PhD focused on applying methods from the field of spatial epidemiology to assist human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) elimination, producing geospatial estimates of tsetse fly abundance and access to sleeping sickness diagnostics. Prior to commencing his PhD, Josh worked as a research assistant at the University of Oxford (2014-2017).

Within the VBD Ecology Lab, Josh specialises in applying geospatial methods to inform surveillance and control of infectious diseases, including:

  • Estimating disease risk through the use of geostatistical models

  • Quantifying access to diagnostics

  • Optimisation of vector and host sampling

Joshua's work aims to assist in field-based sampling and detection of mosquito-borne viruses and other vector-borne infectious diseases.
